For my Senior Capstone Project, I chose to create tour for the Indie-Pop band, AJR. I have been a fan of theirs for years and I also have a huge love for music in general. AJR creates a magical experience for whoever comes to their shows or listens to their music. They have a really cool way of creating reactive videos and effects during their concert, but I noticed they never really had a theme for their concerts or merchandise to advertise the band or what the tour was all about.
The goal of my project was to create an interesting and creative tour experience for the band titled "Euphoria" with the tag line "The Best of Us" based on their best songs and singles from all their albums. I chose the name Euphoria because it means a feeling of intense excitement or happiness. From my research, that is how the fans feel when attending one of their concerts and I felt like it would be the perfect title for the bands tour. The tag line was chosen based on the fact I chose to design and create deliverables based on their most popular songs and best hits.
I chose to create/revamp their merchandise because the merchandise on their online shop was lacking in variety and also lacked in tour related merchandise. I also noticed they had a tab for posters, yet no posters were avaliable to buy. That led me to my other goal, to create cohesive merchandise and posters that fans could buy and hold on to as they listen to the band for years to come. I also chose to redo their website where you could buy tickets for their tour, purchase merchandise, and listen to their music all in one place.
Everything for my project was physically produced. I created clothing which included a t-shirt, an embroidered long sleeve, a hoodie, and a custom pair of converse. I created 3 different types of posters, a concert annoucement (front and back), a poster based on their song "come hang out", and a set of 4 posters based on their popular songs. I created a new website and 3 kinetic typography videos that included motion graphics and videography. Lastly, I also made tickets and passes that would be used for the tour.
The first piece of clothing I designed was based on their song "BANG!." BANG is repeated four times as a refence to how many times it is sang in the chorus. "Here we go!" is green and in a different font than BANG to resemble special vocal effect they placed on the sentence when it was sang.
I wanted the design on the t-shirt to try and show a visual reprsentation of how the feeling of Euphoria would look. This includes a rainbow of colors and almost a floating in space type vibe. It also includes the tours font which I chose to represent euphoria as well.
For the last piece of clothing, I wanted it to be different to offer variety. For this reason, I chose to have it embroidered instead of having the design in vinyl. The long sleeve is based on their song "Way Less Sad". I created the mark :): based on the song and included the lyrics "Ain't happy yet, but I'm way less sad" to go around it. The logo was also embroidered on the sleeve instead of the top back or front left like the other two pieces of clothing.
I chose to design converse based solely on the fact that they are the only shoe I really wear and I don't think I've seen a band sell shoes so it's pretty original. I wanted the design to be something that AJR fans would love and recognize so I chose to illustrate little pictures based on their song titles and song lyrics. You can see illustrations made to represent the songs such as, birthday party, humpty dumpty, bang, call my dad, and much more.
The first poster is the concernt annoucement. It contains a front and a back. The front of the poster shows the lead singer in one of his famous poses with the tag line "The Best of Us" behind him.
The back has a euphoric and futuristic vibe and shows all of the concert dates and places.
I chose to make the concert annoucement front and back so the fans could have a cool poster to hang up but also have all the dates to the tour. It's a good 2-in-1.
I wanted this song based poster to be simple yet stay cohesive with the theme. I chose to leave the background and the image in black and white but add pops of the tour colors with the floating blobs. I didnt want the words to just look like they were slapped on the top layer so I made the band member look like they were under, over, and even on top of the words.
I wanted to make this design a set of posters to include the band members all together then individually. The background was made to look like space to tie in with the Euphoria t-shirt and the back of the concert announcement. The sheet music in the background is also sheet music to their most popular songs. The images of the band members were also made to look as if they were painted on or mosiac versions of themselves to add a little flare.
I didn't want to create your normal live nation or seat geek ticket because that's boring and basic. I decided to take a more creative route. The front of the ticket contains the neon AJR logo and the seat for whoever purchased it. The colors of the tour are also contained in the gradient with a clipping mask of the the stars used in the posters and euphoria t-shirt for texture. The back of the tickets contains more details about the concert, has a barcode to scan, and even conatins a QR code that allows the person to scan it so see where they are sitting in the arena on their phone.
I wanted to incorprate VIP passes because that is something I tend to buy when I attend concerts. Go big or go home am I right? The front of the pass contains the same gradient as used in the tickets to make it more cohesive. The back conatins the same information as seen on the concert annoucement poster. the same star texture and image is used for these as well.
